1. Walls must be flat: Unlike solid wood, which allows for minor adjustments during nailing, MDF skirting boards reveal obvious gaps if the wall surface is uneven. The wall substrate must be leveled and cleaned thoroughly before installation.
2. 45-degree corner joints: Cutting the boards at a 45-degree angle for corner joints creates a more attractive finish and reduces the risk of cracking.
3. Sealing gaps with caulk: Applying sealant along the top edge of the skirting board and at the gap with the floor prevents dust and water infiltration. Installers may not automatically seal the floor gap, so it is important to specify this requirement in advance.
