Materials needed:
1. Basswood plywood (3mm thick)
2. Laser cutter (recommended power ≥100W)
3. Drawing file (CDR/CAD/DXF/PDF, your choice)
Steps:
1. File Import
Import the drawing file into the laser cutting software. Adjust the cutting parameters (speed recommended 500-800mm/s, power 80%-90%) and check if your basswood board is large enough. Carefully review all settings and decide whether to add or remove elements according to your preferences. Pay special attention to the power settings for laser cutting layers.
2. Board Positioning
Secure the basswood plywood to the laser cutting machine’s worktable, ensuring the board is flat, clean, and securely fixed to prevent movement during cutting—using low positioning pins, small clips, or lightweight masking tape around the edges.
Tip: There are three common types of positioning pins: T-type, L-type, and F-type. A special use of F-type pins is to clamp the plywood to prevent scorch marks. Pay attention to the height of the magnets and positioning pins. If they are too high, the sensors may hit them and be damaged during processing.
3. Focusing the Laser Cutting Machine
Proper focusing ensures clean cuts and smooth edges. If your machine has an autofocus function, use it for quick setup. For manual focusing, use the focus bar to lower the laser head until it contacts the wood surface at the perfect angle. Always double-check before cutting.
4. Cutting Operation
First Cut: Outer contour line (speed 600mm/s, power 85%)
Second Cut: Internal hollow area (speed 500mm/s, power 80%)
Note: Maintain a distance of ≤1mm between the cutting head and the board to avoid jamming.
5. Post-processing
Deburring: Sand the edges with 150# sandpaper.
Coating: Optional varnish or wood wax oil to enhance texture. Assemble according to the design drawings.
Precautions
The recommended moisture content of basswood plywood is 8%-12%.
The cutting head height must be calibrated before cutting (0.5mm recommended).
Wear protective glasses during operation and ensure good ventilation in the work area.
These parameters have been tested and are suitable for batch cutting of 3mm basswood plywood. If adjustments to thickness or material are needed, a trial cut test is recommended first.
