MDF board, also called Medium-density fiberboard, is a board with a density of 0.50 to 0.88 g/cm3, made of wood fiber or other plant fiber, with urea-formaldehyde resin or other synthetic resin applied and pressed under heating and pressure conditions.

MDF board is mainly divided into the following categories:
1. Indoor MDF board (referred to as indoor type board), represented by the symbol MDF, is a medium-density fiberboard that does not withstand short-term water immersion or high humidity. The board color is marked as natural color.
2. Indoor moisture-proof medium-density fiberboard (referred to as moisture-proof type board), represented by the symbol MDF.H, is a medium-density fiberboard that can withstand short-term cold water immersion or high humidity, suitable for use in indoor kitchens, bathrooms and other environments. The board color is marked as green.
3. Outdoor medium-density fiberboard (referred to as outdoor type board), represented by the symbol MDF.E, is a medium-density fiberboard that can withstand aging under climatic conditions, water immersion or steam and heat in ventilated places. The board color is marked as gray.
Characteristics of MDF Board:
1. Smooth and smooth surface, uniform material: Free from natural knots or grain, suitable for fine carving, milling, and veneer application (such as wood veneer, melamine board, paint), resulting in a smooth and consistent finish, such as wood veneer MDF and melamine MDF board.
2. Good processing performance: Easy to saw, drill, and edge-band; high dimensional stability (less prone to warping than solid wood), but weaker nail-holding power, easily loosened after repeated disassembly and assembly.
3. Moderate density and strength: Superior static bending strength and internal bond strength compared to particleboard, but limited load-bearing capacity, unsuitable for long-term load-bearing structural components (such as bed boards and heavy-duty shelves).
4. Poor moisture resistance: Ordinary MDF easily swells and deforms after absorbing water, unsuitable for humid environments (such as kitchens and bathrooms); a moisture-resistant type (with added waterproofing agent) must be selected, and proper edge sealing is necessary.
5. Inconsistent Environmental Friendliness: Traditional MDF uses urea-formaldehyde resin, resulting in higher formaldehyde emissions (E1 or ENF grade environmental certification should be selected); newer products can achieve “formaldehyde-free” status using MDI adhesive.
6. Significant Weight: Heavier than particleboard and solid wood, requiring careful consideration of load-bearing capacity during handling and installation.
Applications of MDF Board:
MDF board has good physical and mechanical properties and processing properties. It can be made into boards of different thicknesses, so it is widely used in furniture manufacturing, construction, and interior decoration.
MDF board is a homogeneous porous material with good acoustic properties. It is a good material for making speakers, TV housings, and musical instruments.
In addition, MDF board can also be used in ships, vehicles, sports equipment, flooring, wall panels, partitions, etc. to replace natural wood. It has the characteristics of low cost, simple processing, high utilization rate, and is more economical than natural wood.
